# Ten-One: The Day Football Became a Massacre

June 15, 1982. Elche, Spain. Hungary vs El Salvador. The biggest winning margin in World Cup history. 10-1.

El Salvador: 4.5 million people, torn by civil war. Their qualification was a miracle. Then they landed in a group with Hungary, Argentina, and Belgium. Hungary scored in the 4th minute. Again. Again. Halftime: 3-0. Second half: seven more. El Salvador's lone goal — Luis Ramirez — received an ovation from the Spanish crowd. Sincere. The Salvadoran players celebrated that goal like they'd won the World Cup.

After the match, Hungary's players looked almost embarrassed. "What could we do? Not score? That would be disrespectful." The Salvadorans shrugged. "We lost 10-1. But we were there. We played at a World Cup."
