Four Times They Came Second, and Four Times They Came Back

Germany: eight World Cup finals. Four wins. Four losses. Four times, German players walked past the trophy without touching it.

1966. Wembley. The ghost goal. Hurst's shot hit the bar, bounced on the line, given. England 4-2 Germany. Fifty-eight years later, Germans still call it "Das Wembley-Tor."

1982. Spain. Italy 3-1. Paolo Rossi. German newspapers: "The Best Team Lost."

1986. Mexico. Argentina 3-2. Maradona didn't score, but he didn't need to. He assisted the winner.

2002. Japan/Korea. Brazil 2-0. Ronaldo's redemption. Ballack in the stands — suspended for a tactical yellow he knew would keep him out. "I had to make that foul."

Four silver medals. Four times walking past the trophy. Four times coming back.
